Lagos, Nigeria comes to Oakland’s House of Music Sept. 30, as Onas Entertainment presents the 2011
Nigerian Independence Day Gala.

In honor of the 51st anniversary of Nigerian Independence Day, Onas Entertainment presents a can’t miss mini-festival headlined by two of Nigeria’s top hip-hop acts: Jaywon and Capital F.E.M.I.
Also appearing are Bay Area-based Nigerian-rap artist Big Klief Ofigho; Ariya Soundz, a live juju band featuring Rasaki Oladokun and Gbadura (King Sunny Ade); and DJs Michael Onas
(Worldbeat/Lagos Party), Jeremiah (Kalakuta/Afrobeat Na Go Die), DJ Mundi (Kalakuta), DJ SLIM, DJ Samuel (Samco), and Vince Gbenga, Idris, and Tony O (Serengeti Soundz).

A fashion show, African art, and Nigerian cuisine add to the cultural flavor of this amazing, culturally-groundbreaking event, which introduces African hip-hop to Oakland’s newest cultural center and entertainment destination, House of Music. The event runs from 8pm-2am, with a pre-show red carpet VIP reception, plus an after-hours VIP event following the concert.  All international hip-hop fans, African culture enthusiasts, dancers, drummers, and music and art lovers are strongly encouraged to attend what promises to be the Bay Area’s #1 African-themed event of the year.

Sonny Okosuns (Sonny Okosun), musician and evangelist, born January 1 1947; died May 24 2008.
The Nigerian singer, guitarist and composer Sonny Okosuns, who achieved global
success in the 1970s and 80s with the highlife-reggae hit Fire in Soweto, died in
Washington DC of colon cancer at the age of 61. He found fame across Africa
with his socio-political "liberation" lyrics and crossover style of internationalized
pop highlife. He released almost 40 albums and his appeal to mainstream
audiences was helped by the high production values he brought to his
recordings. In his later career he turned to religion, performing as Evangelist
Sonny Okosuns.

In the song titled Revolution; sonny Okosun wondered why the world super-powers were heading to the moon, when millions are dying of hunger and lack of clean drinking water for most people.

I fondly remember Sonny Okosun as a gifted humanitarian and human rights activist, who was at the
fore-front of speaking through his music against injustice, world hunger and
most notably against apartheid. His music was mixture of Afrobeat and Highlife.
Sonny Okosun had tremendous stage presence, with traditional costumes and
choreography. He had performed, collaborated and was close friends with many local and
international stars, including Eddy Grant, Mighty Sparrow, Bob Marley, Peter
Tosh and Fela.

Sonny, though you left at a very early age, your message will live forever in the hearts of
many. Rest in peace. Read more about late Evangelist Sonny Okosun

This Lagos highlife episode number 10 is dedicated to my mother; Yemi who recently celebrated her 72nd birthday last Sunday. A graduate of Mass Communication from University of Lagos, she was a pioneer female journalist at the Tribune newspaper in Ibadan, where she was known as Aunty Yemi, reporting on various women health, equal rights, post independent politics, relationship and news for several years. She later worked at Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation as a public relations executive in Lagos.

This podcast and my love of music is a direct result of my childhood exposure to radio and highlife music by my parents. Thank you very much for your love and may you remain blessed with good health, happiness and long life.

Most bands will play non-stop from 9:00pm to 6:00am.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti ,born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti (15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), would have turned 71 years old today. This episode is a special celebration of his life as a talented musician and human rights advocate. Fela fought for freedom of speech and spoke truth to power in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Some of the songs included in this mix were released in the 70’s and 80’s, but the messages in the music are still very current in Nigeria and Africa today. Both Femi and Seun Kuti proudly continues the legacy. May Fela’s soul rest in perfect peace, Amen
