This episode is a special celebration of his life as a talented musician and human rights advocate. Fela fought for freedom of speech and spoke truth to power in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Some of the songs included in this mix were released in the 70’s and 80’s, but the messages in the music are still very current in Nigeria and Africa today. Both Femi and Seun Kuti proudly continues the legacy. May Fela’s soul rest in perfect peace, Amen

Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi

Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey is by far one of my favorite
juju artists. Growing up in Yaba, Obey’s famous Miliki spot was located less
than a mile north from my home and about a quarter mile south was Fela Kuti’s
Kalakuta Republic, original Shrine and King Sunny Ade’s Ariya club. Victor
Olaiya’s stadium hotel in Surulere was a short cab ride away and further south
on Ikorodu road was Bobby Benson’s hotel. Both Sunny Ade and Dele Abiodun were
residents of Bariga area where my family had a provision store and both could be
found in the neighborhood handing out money to the less fortunate. Those were
the best of times in Lagos, Nigeria and I was surrounded with music.

Ebenezer Obey’s music reflects historical timeline of
events in post-independent Nigeria, highlighting names of the movers and shakers
of that period, including governors, traditional rulers and other local
dignitaries. You may call each of his record a time capsule and there were many
of them. Some of his timeless music collections are also now available on the
evergreen re-issues. I hope this podcast would remind you of some the great Obey
treasures you may already have or should add to your collections. Need an
uplifting music in challenging and confusing times? Look no further than the
soothing voice, positive messages and perfect rhythmic compositions of the Chief
Commander Obey. On April 3, 2009 Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi celebrated his 67th birthday, Long live Ebenezer Obey!
